Cousin Test for Parents (family tree, surnames, sibling, testing)

Hi All,

I'm unsure whether I'm interpreting the results correctly here. These were my results (using GEDmatch):

Largest individual segment of SNPs with greater than 500 matches: 917

Total autosomal SNPs in segments with greater than 500 matches: 917

Largest Single-Block Genetic Distance = 3.8288 cM

Total Genetic Distance = 3.8288 cM

Interpreting your results:

I haven't analyzed enough data to make firm predictions about cousin relationships, but here are some guidelines based on my observations for Total genetic distance cM values:

Sibling 2350 cM
Half Sibling 1600 cM
First Cousin 800 cM
Second Cousin 200 cM
Third Cousin 100 cM
Fourth Cousin 50 cM
Fifth Cousin 25 cM

Generally, when the Largest Single-Block Genetic Distance is less than 1, it can be assumed that no relationship exists. If the Largest Single-Block Genetic Distance is greater than 10, then the relationship is probably within the past few generations.

Does that mean that because the largest individual segment of SNPs with greater than 500 matches is 917, that my parents were most likely first cousins? Or am I reading this wrong? I was adopted, so this would be very interesting information for me.

Update:

So those results were using my Family Tree DNA kit number. Using my 23andme kit number, the results are:

Largest Single-Block Genetic Distance = 0 cM

Total Genetic Distance = 0 cM

How are the two results so different? Ugg. Annoyed.

As someone who does not know the diff between R1 and L-512, but belongs to a surname DNA project on familytreedna, I would join your surname project and ask. They started testing Big Y recently. Many of the families associated with this DNA project were in Western Europe 8-10,000 year ago. I found my parents and grandparents surnames in the group tree.

BTW there does not seem to be any standard for testing DNA markers..I do like what the FamilyTree testing does. You will get different results from different companies. Stick with one.

Gedmatch predicts the relationship for you.

Look on the table in the section called "Autosomal". The last column in that section is called "Gen".

For example, in my mother's kit, I am showing as "1" in that column.
