Thanks for the update. I had never heard of them being down that long but I just couldn't imagine anyone attacking Ancestry or Find A Grave. Don't know what the motive could be unless it's just someone's idea of "fun."
Thanks for posting this info. Can't imagine who would want to attack a genealogy website?
A DOS attack is not that difficult - it's not necessarily an experienced "hacker". Usually, it's someone with a grudge and there are plenty of disgruntled Ancestry.com customers/haters out there, any one of which could know how to do a DOS attack. I once met someone who had a rampant hatred for ACOM even though 90% of what he criticized them for either wasn't true or was standard for all genealogy websites. All it takes is one crazy person with a grudge against ACOM and enough knowledge to administer a DOS attack.
It may well be true, but I find the timing a bit suspicious because they're integrating findagrave, rootsweb and other pages that just won't load. I'm going to give it a rest for about a week; it's very frustrating.
It IS frustrating. Last night I clicked on links that led me to Ancestry but it was a dead end. I got in once and then not at all. I hope they find whoever did this. Maybe they are trying to get too big though, eating rootsweb and Find A Grave.
Most frustrating for me is seeing that ACOM were obviously in the process of updating a collection I've been waiting for for years now but it's obviously been halted by the attack. The title of the collection has been updated to include more years but when you search it (when ACOM is working) the records haven't been added yet. Anyone else with PA research probably knows I'm talking about the PA Death Certificates collection. Not being able to do your research is bad enough - but being taunted with a collection you've been waiting this long for and knowing it would be there if it weren't for the attack... argh!
As of an hour ago, everything is up and running for me. Bonus: the search function in my DNA matches had not been working at all before the DDoS attack, but this morning it's all good.
