I haven't done research at the National Archives since the move to Suitland MD. That's a LONG time ago. LOL
That said, you need to be aware that the records you want may not be at the National Archives but at one of the regional archives. Several years ago I came across an index card (FamilySearch.com) that referenced my 2nd ggrandfather's naturalization record. The index indicates he was naturalized in the Federal District Court of Maine and according to the National Archives website, means the record is housed in the regional archive located in Massachusetts, not in the National Archives.
I thought that the National Archives had copies of all federal records archived at other sites but according the archives website, this does not appear to be true.
I have but it wasn't for genealogy. While I was dating my husband before we got married, he was doing some historical research on the U.S. involvement in the Chilean Coup of 1973. A lot of those papers were recently declassified shortly before we went down. Since my dad lived in the D.C. area at the time, I thought it would be a good time to go visit him and be my husband's research assistant.
I don't have to go to the Library of Congress to find out genealogy. The info about my family there was written by my mother and I have copies of her research in my own personal library.
Cat: You are very lucky. I have alot of info too, written by relatives, but the major player, my gggrandfather, left his family in England near Liverpool. There were 14 brothers and sisters. If he came here alone, in my mind, I want to give him the credit he deserves, and I want to know what happened to all the others. Regardless, I am grateful to him for what he started.
