My surname is pretty uncommon - according to:

Surnames Meanings, Origins & Distribution Maps

My name has a global incidence of only 113.

And on:

How Popular is Your Last Name? | The Sweetest Sound | POV | PBS

Nothing came up, but it said "You are the first visitor to this site to enter that name (out of a total of 3,479,693 name entries)."

So obviously, I can never cite my name online or I could be immediately identified!

Anyway, Rebsamen is a very unusual name in the US.
I knew a Turnipseed. Was a cousin of a Hegwood, both unusual names. As for Rebsamen, I was born at a Rebsamen Memorial Hospital.

Odd surnames of slave ancestors in my family:

Taliaferro

An Italian surname that a number of black people have today see (Lorenzo Taliaferro). I linked it to one of the first families in Virginia.

Cruz (I mentioned this one in another thread)

A Spanish surname. Never met another American black family with the name Cruz. I have just a few living Cruz relatives left. There's no link whatsoever to a Latin-American. My Cruz ancestor was also not owned by a family with that name. They may have just chose this surname arbitrarily.

Whitesides.

This is a common surname, but its just odd sounding to me.

Loud

Uncommon. I think we are the only African-American Loud family in the country.

Recently I have been tracing one of my ancestor's who some other people in my genealogical circle believed descended from a woman with the surname of Mnu.

I don't even know how to pronounce that lol (I'm thinking "new" is the pronunciation).
I've always thought Ng was a nice last name

I believe it is a very close translation and maybe a direct translation.

That's cool - there are a few Rebsamens around but neither Rebsamen nor Turnipseed are common last names. I think Turnipseed is the more common of the two but I could be mistaken.

Thanks for the links. My name has a global incidence of 1,471 (with only 101 in the U.S. and nearly all the rest in Poland).

On the POV site, I was the "first visitor to this site to enter that name (out of a total of 3483214 name entries)."

I recently found out that my mothers father had 3 brothers that went to MN from Hungary. I never found them before because the last name spelling was changed. I just put it into the last name website; it said I was the only one that entered it.
