Anyone willing to hazard a guess at the occupation following the name of "Paul, John"? I included a few other lines to give an idea of handwriting. All the other occupations are relatively easy to decipher.
The first letter almost looks like the "F" in "Farmer" on the next line, but I still cannot figure out what John Paul's occupation was. Thanks for any suggestions.
All I can decipher is that the last 3 letters spell man. I do not think the first letter looks like an F. I will be following this thread to see what the mystery occupation is.
Thanks. Yeah, I didn't think it looked like an "F" either, but it looks very similar to the first letter in Farmer on the following line. "Forgeman" maybe??
Can you tell us any more information? The years, where he hails from, age, anything?
Sorry, should have done that. It’s from an 1821 tax list in Huntingdon County, PA. I do not have an age or anything else about him. I’m trying to connect him to an ancestor, but haven’t got there yet.

I can make out every single letter. I agree with those who say Forgeman, which actually was an occupation. The "dot" over the "r" that makes it look like an "i" is a moldy spot on the paper - it's not the same color as the ink.

Thank you! Now see, that helps much in identification. You can trace back to the era, the population, the industries at the time. "Forgeman" can be a distinct possibility.
