So, I'm finally having some time to be able to catalog some photos that go back a few generations. What's the best/safest method of storing the actual photos?

I would back them up on an external hard drive. I would also back up that hard drive with a thumb drive or two because technology fails. I have one drive I need to get recovered. It was my master backup.

I'm not sure I would live long enough to scan them in!! Even if I was in my youth, which I'm not.
I know there are services that will take a box of photos and have them scanned in delivered on DVDs. I don't know how much though.
As for archival of the actual photos, make sure they are in an acid free box. Depending on size you can keep them separated by also archival quality tissues or separators. Just make sure they are archival quality/acid free.
I recommend archival (acid-free) pages (for multiple photos) or sleeves (for single photos), and then keep them in an archival box or binder. B&H Photo Video and Adorama have good selections. Amazon might, too.
They also sell them for slides and negatives, so you can safely store those as well, if you have them.
Cloud storage would provide redundancy and better safety and allow access from anywhere.
Until the cloud goes out of business. Had that happen with a few photo sites.
