I only have 2nd cousins, no first cousins, but I'm in close contact with several of them, as close as if they were first cousins. We visit, call, text, and e-mail. Recently I was contacted for genealogical info by a cousin whose great-grandmother and my paternal great-grandmother were sisters, so that would make her a 3rd cousin, I think. We send each other occasional e-mails. We're both interested in our genealogical history,l so we were able to help each other put faces and stories to names.
What would you call the children of your 2nd cousins? I'm really close to several of them, too. They don't have any relative closer than me, either, other than their parents, so I think of them as my "nieces and nephews."
On my dad's side, we have contact with some third cousins as they are remaining Holocaust survivor descendants and therefore we are like more immediate family/relatives to them.

The children of your 2nd cousins are your 2nd cousins once removed.
I don't except for the ones I have met on Facebook. I may have run into a few just by living in the same general area as them, but we certainly didn't know we related. I'm wondering how many of us know our relatives beyond a first or second cousin or a first or second cousin once removed.
I don't think I'd ever hear from a 3rd cousin unless I won the lottery.
No, only second cousins from my great uncle. Used to visit them during the holidays. Now only the youngest one of those cousins is still alive. I do, however, have a ton of first cousins once/twice/three times removed that I know/know of.
A third cousin is the child of your parent’s second cousin. Your second cousin is the child of your parent’s first cousin, etc. Your children and your third cousin’s children would be fourth cousins. In most cases, your third cousin has a great-grandparent whose sibling is your great-grandparent. Thus, you and your third cousin share a set of great-great-grandparents.
