(1) The utility pole right in front of the house. There's an alley behind the house, but this Indiana city hasn't taken the time, anytime in the last, oh, fifty years, to move the utilities to the alley or underground.

(2) The broken sidewalk (12" upraise at a tree root) and curb that is 4" higher than the sidewalk in some spots.

And this is Valparaiso, a community that is supposed to be better than this.

1.) The lack of natural beauty, parks, or places for outdoor activites for people to enjoy...looks like a flat, sterile, souless, concrete wasteland
2.) The insufferable heat during the summers....I got heat exhaustion twice this summer trying to "acclimate" to the heat and I've lived here for 5 yrs!
3.) Soo many 30k d-bags, superficial snobs, and shallow people stuck on themselves....and lack of common courtesy or manners in general
4.) Overhype of the sports team, muesuems, culture, and of the city in general
5.) the traffic and atrocious drivers

I feel suffocated living here.......

Cincinnati Area: Not a bad city; in fact, one of the great cities of the Midwest and underrated, no less, on a national scale. It is a step above other places I've lived. But I certainly don't want to spend the rest of my life here.

Not all, or even most, people, but a very large contingent of just rude, nasty, hateful, impolite people. (Plenty of nice ones, yes, but the rude public outbursts and road rage are common.)

People don't seem very happy here.

Social and racial segregation that, while common in practically all U.S. cities, is mind boggling here.

Plenty of greasy white trash. This is different from Southern rednecks and not really for the better. I see where Jerry Springer got the inspiration for his show, only he was smart enough to actually move.

Much of the city is run down, grimy and dirty. (There are plenty of nice areas, however, to be sure.)

Very heavy/congested traffic highways for a metro of 2.1 million. It's not L.A., NYC or Chicago for Pete's sake. (At least it's only during rush hour and I actually take a secondary road that makes my commute much quicker.)

Very limited economic opportunities.

Absolute pure stupidity of our local airport board. They have, in three years, turned our airport from a world-class connecting hub to a nearly trivial landing pad, and that's not an exaggeration.

Strange neighbors. There is one middle-aged couple that seems really nice, but many of my neighbors are white trash, creepy, or "disabled" (as they themselves define it). I politely speak in passing and that's it.

---

And the ironic thing? I actually would not mind living in L.A. It is still a world capital of commerce, industry and has a strong market (relative to other U.S. metro areas) in the line of work I really want to go into. (It's not acting, fashion, banking, or porn, either.) And at least L.A. doesn't put on its own veneer of Midwestern values and hospitality. Plus, the diversity in microclimates, peoples, cultures, languages, and neighborhoods fascinates me, and semi-arid mountains and bluffs overlooking the Pacific are more inspiring to me than green hills. Nothing wrong with green hills, mind you; they're pretty for nine months of the year, but right now they're pretty boring to look at because there are no leaves on the trees. Of course, I "ain't just'a gonna" move out there for any ol' job b/c the COL is much higher, so I have to be cognizant of salary requirements. I also like the Central Coast of CA and much of Texas (wide open spaces there with large, healthy cities.)

Houston Texas
4 months or the year (May, June, July and August) that you live in a blast furnace running from your air conditioned house to your air conditioned car and back into another air conditioned building. How I'd love to be able to open the windows and let some air in!
High humidity and high heat with no rain showers to cool it off for months on end
Flat, flat, flat landscape. No hills or mountains to break it up.
and finally the scariest driving habits I've ever seen. Tailgating made into an artform, no use of turn signals and just generally rude drivers are the norm here rather than the exception.
