I recently got a job in Virginia and I am required to drive there. I am a huge packers fan and decided to take a detour to Green Bay with my girlfriend on my way. The game is on Jan. 2nd and here is what I have: 1997 Toyota Corolla with 160,000 miles with brand new ice tires and will have a full tune up before I leave. I am driving from Portland>Idaho>Montana>ND>MN>Green Bay leaving probably around the 28th of December. After the game I will be heading south through IN into VA by Jan 5th.

Does anyone have any advice for a first time traveler across the country? I did live in Grand Forks, ND for a year so I am familiar with the brutal weather. Thanks!

I'd pack some blankets and some other provisions such as chocolates and some water in the event you have car or weather problems. Might as well throw in a cheap weather band radio in the mix. Others will chime in... Just thought I'd cover the obvious first off...

Watch the weather carefully and be prepared to be delayed. If possible leave a day or two earlier so you don't miss the game.

Chocolate, water and blankets are always part of my road trips as are sandwiches, granola bars, and munchies to get me through since I'm not a fan of fast food. I also pack a couple of bottles of screw top wine or some microbrews so I have something to drink in the hotel after a long drive. You may also want to pick up some of those instant heat hand and foot warmer packs, probably won't need them for the drive, but you may need them for the game.

Depending on how your trip plots out you may want to make NYE reservations for a hotel so you're not stuck without a room.

I agree with OP, add at least one extra day to be safe, weather or car issues.

Plan your trip on main roads, especially with winter weather. Stock the car with food as per the OP along with flares, shovel.

If you have an IPOD load the APP "Around Me" which will give you info regarding gas stations, restaurants, hotels, shopping. Also load "WIFI Finder."
