I've got items like air conditioner, edger, law mower, snow blower, etc. I figure I'll start at about 1/2 of the new price.

If you actually want to sell the items at a yard sale you need to go way below 1/2 of original price. If you want more $$$ you need to post them on Craigslist.

Depending on the age of the mower and what it actually is you are probably looking at $20-$35. I bought a Kee commercial mower in pristine condition at a yard sale for $40.

A/C? A window unit? Used? Kind of in the same price range as a mower.

Try craigslist first for items like that. I sold some yard things pretty quickly (if cheaply).

Yard sale items are generally priced at 25% of original cost, IF they are in great condition. Lower if you absolutely want to get rid of them. If you want more, use Craig's List and supply pictures. Takes a little longer but you will hear from more people. If you do end up going with garage sale, perhaps putting a sign on some of the items (with a reserve amount in your head) asking them to make an offer. You might be surprised at what some people would be willing to pay, or the ridiculous offers that they might make.

Stuff sold at a yard sale should be priced to SELL IMMEDIATELY. Nothing over $40.

People go to yard sales expecting cheap stuff. Sorry, but unless you have an item that is completely brand new or some valuable antique furniture you won't get 1/2 price for it. If you want to have a successful yard sale it's usually better to think in terms of "I am trying to get rid of this" and not "how much can I make off of it."

Depends on whether your primary goal is to get rid of stuff or to make money.

I had a yard sale this year, and since my primary goal was to get rid of stuff, I priced it all to MOVE. The boyfriend complained that I wasn't charging enough, and my neighbors all said my prices were too low.

But I kept telling them all my primary goal was to get rid of stuff, with the secondary goal of making money being just icing on the cake. I made several hundred dollars, and had hardly anything left at the end of the day, while the neighbors all had to haul tons of stuff back into their houses, or leave it on the curb for trash pickers.

Sure, if my primary aim was to get money, I could have charged more for each item, but then I'd still have a bunch of those things lying around the house.

My motto: price it low, and it'll go.

if you want to make money put it on craigslist

if you want to get rid of it - price it accordingly.

our last yard sale i sold a king size canopy bed (new over $1000) for $50. and i was happy to see it go bye bye

my husbands riding mower (john deere) sold for $50

push mower (husqvarna) $30

clothes, books, nick nacs ranged from $1 to $5

small appliances around $3

kids toys - all were under $5

baby clothes - 50 cents a piece
