Forgot to say that there are three hotel chains that are 100% pet friendly with no additional charges. Some may not allow pets in ALL their rooms, and may have limitations on type and number of pets.

La Quinta

Red Roof Inn

Motel 6

Our preference is La Quinta.

I didn't know LaQuinta accepted pets. Cool! Thanks for the heads up!

I talked with my wife again. She'd really rather not drive separate cars, so it looks like I might have to recruit a friend or a family member. Or just pay to transport one of the vehicles.

So maybe I'll drive the hatchback up first. I can fold the seats down and store a lot of stuff in it. But I wouldn't put anything valuable in that car just in case thieves are looking for an easy mark. Then I can use that car in Washington to find a temporary apartment or even a house (I've got a real estate contact there now). Once I sign the papers for the apartment lease or house, I can fly back to SC and arrange for the Corolla to be transported or towed behind a moving van. And we'd all take the Sonata up ourselves.

I have a ton of "points" on my credit card that I can use for a free round-trip ticket of up to $600. Maybe I can use those points with a moving company too? So many options. But it's exciting.

We are leaving next week for a cross country drive from AZ to NC. We are taking our dog and cat. We already booked four hotel rooms at various La Quintas because they accept pets. This is how we are determining our route each day. Just be aware that you should call each place to verify their pet policy.
