Me, my wife and Son did as close to Homesteading as you can now days, twenty years ago. We found twenty acres in middle of nowhere. Cleared the land, built a Shack, fenced it, raised Poultry, Rabbits, Calves and Goats.
Lived there for two years without Electric, Phone or Running Water, heck didn't have a Well. It was on a ridge we could see for miles. Eventually we got Electric, Well, Phone and all.
We put up with Brush Fires, Tornadoes, Ice Storms and Snow Storms. lots of times had to walk out.
I remember driving through the woods coming from town. And setting on the next ridge looking at the lights on.
My health got Bad, sold our Stock this alone hurt me. Got to where we decided to build a New house in middle of it, spent Winter clearing out for Electric to it. Well that Spring our neighbor from the city seen what we was doing, thought it would interfere with his hunting. I shot him a rediculas price after weeks of him thinking it over he accepted.
We now live in a regular House 20 miles from there in a Tourist Area with neighbors very close. My wife says it is for the best considering our age and health but I still miss my ridge

Yelp this was the place. I should have stood my ground on not selling.
We left our little three acres of rough woods and moved to subdivision half a continent away. We were too old to deal with the issues of a well, snow removal on a slope, woodpeckers seeking shelter in our cedar siding, and deer depredations. We are close to our family, and they are happy to have us closer. For us the move has been great. We don't miss all the probs and we do enjoy our grands. So sorry your move has not been as happy. But, is it possible that you are not remembering the problems you had while living in a remote place? And it sounds as if your wife is happy to be where she is.
The age and health issues are big issues!
But I understand your missing the old place, brushrunner. Some folks are cut out for a life out in the middle of nowhere, and there is a lot of satisfaction in buying a piece of land and making your own home from scratch on it.
But that kind of life is best left to the young. Age raises hell with us all, and a rough life usually means a rough old age, as the body takes a lot of wear and tear out there. I'll bet you are more comfortable where you are now, even though your heart isn't.
The thing is, a person tends to forget all the hassles and troubles that come with a life lived way out there, and only remembers the good times. Try to keep your nostalgia from getting away from you- I'll bet there were many times when you wished you were living in town, or a lot closer to it, when you were on your place. And I'll bet you were lonely more than once out there, too.
For sure, you can never go back. After you leave a place, it's never the same when you return. You, not the place, change.
