I wouldn't purchase anything expensive through Craig's List.

Too many cons & dangerous people looking to take advantage of honest folk.

Wellllll ... sort of. Two flavors of our venture and both are completely accurate.

1. Local rental houses (not what you want) were horrible - each and every one and we saw a lot.
An agent advertised a house we went to and I called her and told her angrily never send us to any
place that looks like that again.
2. Houses: 1) I'd never trust craigslist to buy a house far from my current location. But I learned
not to trust a certain local large real estate company either. In both cases, houses shown on CL were absolute junk*.

2)*With one exception. I kept a spreadsheet and they were all* (caveat again) sent to us by our lousy real estate agent. However, my partner found our current house on CL at 2 a.m. on a Sunday night and thankfully did not wake me. It landed on the MLS the next day or so. BUT, we had been to the location and knew about the neighborhood because we had a friend here. It was a no brainer. We put an offer on the house probably the next day.
BUT THIS IS THE EXCEPTION and in no way reflects or offsets the nasty neighborhoods
and houses typically listed there.

Be unconfused and don't trust what you see online. It's mandatory you check out the houses and being local allows you to do it faster. Or go where you're thinking of going and rent or get friends you trust 800 miles away to check out the places. (We're doing that for a friend who's about five hours from here. We know almost to a T what she wants.)

Good luck!
