So sorry to hear this OP.
As a sidebar, Bekins held us hostage for an extra $800 as a "carry fee" (I.m sorry, but isn.t a move a carry to begin with). No stairs to navigate. The move from Chicago to Minneapolis was $3800 for a 1B/1B home!!
Unless you have a huge house, I really don't understand why people hire full service movers.
When we move (we have a 2br/2ba apartment), my wife and I box up everything ourselves. I just find two friends or two professional movers to help us load up the truck. The professional movers are usually $50-100 per hour for two people. With four people working, it's done in about an hour. I drive the truck myself.
When I lived and worked in the US, I always went with small, well-known local family movers, who seemed to be very happy to make a ton of extra money driving long-haul. Three times, I did this...maybe more, my memory is a bit hazy. They all did a great job and at a much lower cost with much greater care than I have heard about large companies, like Allied (if they are still around).
