I currently live in Charleston,SC and I need to move a lot of stuff from my previous home in Athens, GA.
When i search for a round trip truck rental with Uhall or Penske it gives me 1$ per mile price which makes it very expensive (500-600$ total). I saw that Penske has unlimited one way rental and I tried to price Mt. Pleasant, SC to Charleston, SC (these places are 10 miles from each other). Penske price estimator gave me a great price of 100$ for this rental.
Is it to good to be true? Can I rent truck in Mt. Pleasant then drive to Athens, GA and then return it to Charleston, SC and pay 100$ for it?
Penske is great. While that does sound low I know they offer better rates. I would call them. When I moved, I talked with a rep and she was very helpful and friendly.
In all our latest moves we chose Penske. In general they were a bit cheaper and the price included mileage. I don't now recall what the free-mileage maximum was, but our last move was 400 miles and that fell into the free-mileage window.
We used Penske for our one-way move from CA to ID and there was no mileage charge. It was the best rate out there and a good truck whereas some of the other companies people say the trucks are rickety. Got AAA discount of $400 dollars off rental too.
Besides the free miles, look at the DATES involved. Often one-way moves come with a time limit. The assumption is you are going from point "A" to point "B" and that will be X days. If the distance is close, you may only have an allowance of 1 or 2 days.
In addition, in the calculations they will list a maximum mileage. So, a 20 mile one way move may come with a 50 mile maximum with additional miles being hefty. The longer distance the move, the more flexible the mileage. So if going from Atlanta to Los Angeles, your mileage allowance will let you take a central, southern or northern route and still be within the mileage. But Atlanta to Macon probably won't give enough free miles to detour via Augusta.
So although it sounds like a plan, read the plan for those gotcha's.
I used penske as well. Good rates and nice trucks. Best of all, they run of diesel which is way cheaper and better mpg than gas. $100 seems low but it depends of the size of the truck. I'd call them and ask.
When we moved from NC to MO, we used Penske because they were the cheapest. UHaul and Budget would be more expensive when you factored in mileage.
However, when we made a 75mi move in state, Penske was way more expensive. For this move we just went with UHaul because it was around half the cost. The truck was almost brand new. I was impressed. Still prefer Penske though.
