I was going to go the traditional route and hire an international mover to move my belongings - about 400 lbs, all in reasonably sized cardboard boxes (zero furniture) - from California to Eastern Europe.

I wonder, though - are there alternatives worth exploring? I wouldn't even mind if it took six months for the boxes to arrive.

I moved myself to Europe. I contracted a half shipping container. It was delivered to my driveway. I packed it up. Then put in some plywood and boards to pack it in tight. They came and moved it to the port of Baltimore. On the ship it went. A few weeks later, I was notified that it had arrived in Palermo. I had to take some custom officers to visibly inspect the contents. They were looking for items that could be sold such as dozens of new shoes in boxes. Then on the other end I had it trucked to where I moved to. I got 2 locals to help unload all of it. Took about 8 hours. Cost was very reasonable.

This was back in 2003. I forget the company that I used. I did an internet search and they were 1 of the first to pop up. Back then the search engines weren't as sophisticated as they are today. Good luck finding what you need.

What's your budget for shipping?

I recently shipped a big box from USA to Germany with my bicycle packed inside with a weight of 51 lbs. I had to pay extra due to the large dimensions of the box. It took a little over a week for shipment. Cost was about $300.

If I had normal sized moving boxes, the charge would have been $156 per box, up to a weight of 66 lbs per box. If you could fit it all into 6 moving boxes, that would be just under $1000, and it will likely arrive in 1 to 2 weeks depending on time to clear customs.

I used SendMyBag.com, a company in the UK. I have used them several times. They contract many shipments with DHL.
