I live on a dead end street of 14 houses. The street is full of cars. Most people do not park in their garage or driveway but instead park on the street. It makes it hard to drive up and down the narrrow street and also makes it tacky looking.
I do not remember anyone parking on the street when I was a kid. How about in your hometown, street or driveway?
I also live on a dead end street with 14 houses. Only time anyone parks on the street is if they are having a party. Everybody on the street has more than an acre of land. Some have more than 4 acres. We always make it so our guests can pull into the driveway and continue into the grass. I like my car too much to park on the street where other cars are passing.
Our neighbors park in their driveway, in front of their house, in front of our house, etc. It almost seems like they're a family of 20, even though it's a family of 6 (two parents, four kids).
They aren’t parking in their driveways, they are parking on the street and leaving their driveways empty!! Those of us who have more than two cars then have to compete for a street spot while the neighbors driveways are bare and empty! What’s with that?

Maybe to discourage those with more than two cars from oiling up the street right in front of their house.
We park in our driveway (usually) while our neighbors park both in driveways and on the street. I've never been so miserable in my own existence that I thought anything of it.
