What do you think? Everyone says America is a racist country, but I see very little blatant racism in America, while in Europe it does seem more acceptable to hate Gypsies, etc. but i really don't know, what do you guys think?
I live in France (I'm french too) and honestly I don't think the US is more racist than european countries (you can't say europe in this case, so many disparities between countries).
In France we have a famous racist politician (Jean-Marie Le Pen) and we never had a non-white president as the US with Obama (it's not for tomorrow...) and we have just 2 black mayors in the country.Racists parties are powerful in Austria and Hungary, in Russia black students are regularly punched.
And don't forget : the US is the most diverse country in the world (about ethnicity, race and religion), it's not the same level..The majority of european countries 90% white and more (here in France it's 85% white, in Poland it's 99%), in the US it's 64%.
I think this might be hard to really compare as Europe has many nations some of which aren't even in the EU.
Going by the studies I'd read on "would you accept a racial minority as neighbor", as well as studies on "do you approve of XYZ people" Italy, Austria, and maybe Spain probably are more racist than us. Also there are some Eastern European that are still way more anti-Semitic than us and most European nations are at least a bit more anti-Semitic/Anti-Jewish than us. (In case the AS term is confusing anyone) Britain I think comes out as about the same as the US. They maybe never had a Black PM, but in percentage terms their black population is much lower. Or at least was until quite recent times. They did have a PM of Jewish descent back in the nineteenth century and I think have had some notable Black British Parliamentarians. Scandinavian nations I think took in more Iraqi Christians than us in the US and I think they tend to come out fairly racially accepting these days. (At one times Swedes reportedly sterilized people for being too "dark", but I think this is very much in the past)
This might fit the World Forum except I think they're sick of this kind of thing.

I agree but both countries have a very different story
I have multiple friends in Europe, and they've all commented very strongly that Europeans tend to say racism is a big problem in the USA because it's very open here, has a history and is discussed. That said though, according to them Europe is more racist than the USA when it comes down to it - they just keep it hush hush and act like it doesn't exist.
They have problems with each other in their white neighboring countries, let alone throw a bunch of black, brown or yellow people into the picture.
As my good friend from Amsterdam will tell me about their open society: "The Dutch love everyone!.....as long as they're Dutch...."
Not that they aren't an open and accepting society, because they are - but it's not all bright smiles and welcoming hugs when you boil it down.
I do not know who is more racist but I have heard some pretty racist and bigoted statements coming from many Europeans in regards to other countries, namely Italians and the Irish.
Please see the room sticky as to what is and what is not on topic for the room. Thank you.
