I could choose all of these (except 60s-70s Soul), because all are tied to Southern culture and have made significant impact on America's music scene. I guess, as a Northerner, I tend to associate country and bluegrass most strongly with the South, along with Southern Gospel.
On the original poll, Mo-Town was included. While I understand it's not on this poll, most (if not all) Mo-Town singers had southern origins. Just listening to many Mo-Town singers, you can hear a southern/soulful sound. Many black Detroiters at that time were just one generation away from their Mississippi, Alabama, etc. roots.
I also happen to think some of best music ever made came out of the Mo-Town era.

Many, if not most, Motown singers were born in Michigan, and lived most of their lives in Michigan. Michigan's not the South. I know you can say that they "had Southern roots," but they weren't from the South, they were from the Midwest. The South claiming Motown would be like Scotland claiming bluegrass because most Appalachian-Americans are of Scottish descent. It doesn't work that way.

Ok, here is the big problem with your train of thought. The Great Migration occurred in the 30s and 40s, and on through the 50s. Where did those people come from? The South.
Their children were only a few years removed from that migration.
Motown was founded in 1959.
It takes much longer for a whole new genre, or style of music to evolve, more than a decade.
You keep on saying that Motown is Midwestern, physically it may be, but Motown totally took its sound and style from Southern R&B, and Southern Gospel.

Reason: completion of thought
this is the music I grew up with and what comes to my mind when I think of southern music.
takes me back to those days in south carolina when I would ride with my grandpa to the spring in his old white pickup, and he would put in his gospel cassette tapes
