Japanese immigration to the US has been decreasing for a long time. They used to be the 2nd or 3rd largest Asian group, now they're like 5th or 6th

I tend to agree that the Japanese influx stopped many years ago and has been replaced by Koreans, Vietnamese & Chinese. The large Japanese populations in both Hawaii and California [as well as Washington state] are a result of migrations in the 20th century and even before.

I believe Brazil has the most Japanese outside Japan. Hawaii might be close.

Gallup has a series on emigration and where people in different countries say they want to move, but I don't find much on Japan. On their map they list Japan as one of the countries low in people with an interest to leave.

700 Million Worldwide Desire to Migrate Permanently

Although they also indicated educated Japanese have some interest in leaving.

Developed Nations Attract Young vs. Educated Migrants

I do know a fair number of Japanese will come to the US for college education because we have more academically revered colleges than they do. (Their colleges are often more about making contacts) Although I think most Japanese who come here for education have no intent to stay here. Still I'd imagine a minority end up staying to teach or because they fall in love or something.

From what i know i belevie that Hawaii and California may have the next largest japanese population outside of japan in the coming future because japan's population is decreasing and shrinking meaning that many japanese are leaving the country every year and decade and the asian population in the united states is expected to more then triple in the coming future years.
