Even tho the northeastern cities of America do not have impressive freeways like the south and west do.
The most impressive freeways I've seen have been in Texas and California. Also, In Miami they just completed a 5 level stack interchange between the Palmetto expressway and Dolphin expressway. Definitely is an impressive piece of infrastructure.
Charleston's freeways do have the feel of a larger city. Even though the metro is about 750-775K for 3 counties, it seems larger. I-26 is at least 6 lanes for 22 miles, and that is expanding farther in the next few years. By 2019, it will be 27 miles of at least 6 lanes, with some areas of 8 and even 10 lanes.
The US 17 Ravenel Bridge over the Cooper River is 8 lanes, and even that gets backed up very frequently.
I-526, on the other hand, is choked with traffic because most of the highway is only 4 lanes wide, 6 on 2 bridges crossing the Wando and Cooper Rivers, respectively.
