I've been researching different cities for a move in about a year and a half. I will be done with my Masters in counseling and am looking for a place no more than 5 hours or so from Augusta, Ga so I can be near family. I have a 10 month old daughter, but am willing to go the private school route if need be. I'm looking right now at Asheville, NC, Knoxville or Chattanooga, TN, or Richmond, VA. I would love a place that is not too big, but yet doesnt shut down at sundown. I'm really into hiking and can't stand this insane Georgia heat. All of these towns have their pros and cons and I've been on this forum looking at everything said.

The Roanoke, VA area is gorgeous and the weather is very nice. If I didn't have so many ties (family) where I am now, I'd move to that area in a heartbeat, some place south of the city. I've never been to Asheville, NC, but at one time, that was a consideration for me except NC is getting so full of transplants at a rapid pace. That is great for some people, but not for me. It also has better weather and is lovely as well.

For what it's worth and it's worth a lot too me, the Roanoke area and Asheville area are not prone to tornadoes, a rarity there.

I've only driven through Knoxville and Chattanooga. Actually, it was hotter there than when I returned to the Atlanta area. It was in June of this year and the day was very hot and humid and quite smoggy. The area is nice with the mountains, but it may be hotter that for what you're looking.

Good luck.

Greensboro, North Carolina. It has a perfect networking population for someone in your field and you will be in a place where you can take your next step, THE PH.D
