Ever since my grandparents migrated from Italy back in the 1950's, my whole family has lived in the Hartford, CT area. I currently see no reason to leave.

Given how transient people in this country seem to be, I would be curious to know how many generations people's families have lived in their cities. Should people be more loyal to a place? I myself am a fourth generation Clevelander, and for that reason it will always be home even if I move away. What is your opinion?
I was fifth generation in my North Jersey hometown. I moved away after my daughter graduated from high school a year and a half ago, because it's just too expensive for me to live there now. When I grew up there, it was a small blue-collar town with woods and creeks, and now it's overbuilt with overpriced houses and a lot of traffic lights have been installed. It's just not the same place anymore. I moved back there as an adult because my mom was in town for my daughter while I worked and the schools are good. Both my parents were born there, and my mom is 82 and has lived in the same house for 53 years.
The funny thing is that I moved about sixty miles south, and my sister, who is into doing our geneaology, found that a half-sister of our great-grandfather married someone from the area I live in now, had a son who was rather prominent in the community, and as she's telling me the family names, I realized that they are all the names of streets in my new neighborhood. I've even got DNA buried in the nearby cemetery!
I think the place I grew up will always be my hometown, but it's just not the same place it once was. I do still have a lot of cousins, first and more distant, in that town--on the police force, in the town council, etc.
My father's side migrated from Israel/ Russia in the mid 1970's and lived in Brooklyn until 1994. 1994-2005 lived in Queens, but since 2003-5 they have been migrating to North Carolina.
My Mother's side is mainly in Israel right now, but my mom migrated here in 1991 and her brother moved to New Jersey in 2007. My Mom lives with me, my dad and my sister in North Carolina now.
400+ years in va. not sure how long in the dc area though. tracing your ancestors is pretty hard when you have over a thousand great grandparents only 10 generations back so i never tried tracing my ancestors.
2nd generation Chicagolander/North on my maternal side, 1st generation born in my suburban hometown
Like many Africans-Americans living up north, my maternal grandparents migrated(seperately) to Chicago from Louisiana and Alabama respectively during the Second Great Migration in the 1950s. They met in Chicago and got married in 1958. Around 1963 or 64', they moved to the south suburbs where most of my immediate family live at now. Me, my mom, sister, and uncle all graduated from the same high school.
An interesting question, apparently my family have been dust in the wind for centuries. Arriving here in the 1600s they don't seem to be in the same place from one generation to the next at any time.
Family History -- Massachusetts, Vermont, New York and back
From what I understand, my family came to Boston in the 1660s.
They lived in Massachusetts until the 1800s, when they moved to central Vermont/Albany, NY. (Some of my family still lives up in VT, I've heard--but I don't know 'em.)
My family moved back to Massachusetts in the 1980s. (First to the Berkshires, and then to the Springfield, Massachusetts area.)
I'm thinking about moving back to Springfield, now that the city is revitalizing.

Are you native American then? Otherwise you couldn't have been in Virginia over 400 years ago.
