We live in England but have US citizenship. We are a doctor and engineer and looking to re-locate to the US in the few years. We have fallen in love with the scenery of the rocky mountain states (Montana, Wyoming, Idaho...) but realise there may be few engineering jobs in this area. We have also been considering the north eastern states and noth western states and were wondering where we should be focusing our search in terms of somewhere we could realistically both find jobs. We would prefer to be somewhere scenic but have no other specific requirements.
Wait wait, but I watched that Michael Moore movie, Sicko, and he painted a pretty rosy picture of being a Doctor in England under the National health insurance plan (I forget the exact name). Do you disagree?
Anywhere you work as a Doctor in the US you are going to be quite well off. There is a huge shortage of Doctors in the USA. Will you have to take the boards though, or does being a doctor in the UK automatically qualify you for working in the USA?

Move to Roanoke, Virginia, where nearby Virginia Tech (which specializes in the field of Engineering) makes engineering jobs readily available (they like people with degrees from foreign schools, they are looking for foreigners, for a change, because of the influx of Virginia Tech Graduates). Roanoke is located in the beautiful and scenic Blue Ridge Mountains! It is also close to the Shenandoah Valley.
There is more engineering in the Rockies than you think. Much of it is based around Denver (which is a nice city BTW) and focuses on oil/gas exploration and mining but it is definitely engineering. I am sure they are paying very well right now.
Another option would be Seattle. Great hospitals there (Swedish) and tons of engineering from aerospace (Boeing) to electrical/computer engineering (Microsoft and the thousands of other companies that have located there because of it).
Anyway, good luck. I love the UK and have spent plenty of time there. As I am sure you are well aware, the US will be VERY different. But, there are plenty of nice places here to live. Personally, I prefer the Northeast and the Northwest (and I would include San Francisco in that). But, to each his own.
Boise actually has quite a bit of engineering activity due to the university there. However, Idaho's 'Treasure Valley' is not really the most scenic part of the state.

Roanoke, Virginia has a lot of engineering jobs there due to the fact that one of the best engineering school in the nation is nearby... Virginia Tech!
