The situation: My husband has a good chance of being offered a position. If he gets it, we can live anywhere in the Southeast. I am starting to do research and I would love some ideas. Here are a few things about us:
1. We like big cities,1 million+
2. We prefer urban living
3. I would be looking for a job in Higher Education, the more universities/colleges, the better
4. We are 30, no children
5. Here are the states we are choosing from: Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee

No cities in the South with a million. I would say Chapel Hill or Durham in North Carolina (Very good colleges there) but they aren't very big.

You seem very liberal so I think you wouldn't like it in Alabama, or Mississippi. Both states aren't very good in education or have big cities.

Charlotte, NC is a big city and is very Urban. Charleston, SC is also very urban and has a good sized population.

Charlotte has these colleges:
University of North Carolina at Charlotte
Central Piedmont Community College
Kings College
Johnson and Whales University

Charleston has:
College of Charleston
Charleston Southern University

Also, you may like Raleigh, NC it's the 2nd largest city in the state (after Charlotte) and has a lot of colleges.

Colleges in Raleigh:

North Carolina State University
Peace College
Wake Tech. Community College
Meredith College

Those are the one's I have heard of. I have never been to Raleigh so I dont know all the colleges but it is very urban and the state capital.

Check out Nashville, home to over a dozen colleges and universities including:
Vanderbilt University
Tennessee State University
Belmont University
Lipscomb University

and in Nashville's suburbs:
Middle Tennessee State University
Cumberland University

Florida would have to be your only real choice...there are no real major urban areas in any of the states you listed, with the exception of Atlanta, GA. I would try Tampa and Miami. They both have major populations and schools/colleges. Good luck!

Just like St Louis city limits being smaller to Indianapolis, but St Louis actually having the larger metro and urban area. There’s no city proper over a million in the southeast because Miami and Atlanta city limits are small especially for sunbelt cities. But ironically in urbanity it will go Miami then Atlanta both 5 million plus by metropolitan areas then the rest will follow, with the largest Tampa being half the size of those two. On the over hand there’s many metros over a million. I don’t know how Miami is in education so I can’t tell you about it. The Raleigh metro area is less then 2 million but it’s known for this, Atlanta, Charlotte, Orlando and Nashville are also no slouch in this department.

South Carolina and Mississippi don't have any urban areas even close to 1 million.

It would be pretty easy to give you a list of places that qualify:

1) Atlanta
2) Charlotte
3) Miami/Dade/Broward/Palm Beach
4) Nashville
5) Tampa/St Pete
6) Birmingham
7) Jacksonville
8)Memphis (barely)
9) Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill (barely: No urban areas really but probably your best choice for higher ed jobs)

ATLANTA IS YOUR SUREST BET: Metro population pushing 6 million, dozens of colleges and universities, world-class museums and theater, great shopping and restaurants, decent nightlife and entertainment, good weather and parks, an airport with direct flights to every city in the world. You can live in a high-rise penthouse in Buckhead or Midtown and take advantage of the MARTA subway right at your door. It doesn't get any more urban than that anywhere in the Southeast.

Barely? The Triangle is about 1.8 million people and is growing more rapidly than the rest of this list (if not the rest of the country). The Census split the former metro into 2 in 2003. The Raleigh/Cary side of the Triangle is 1.2 million. The Durham/Chapel Hill MSA and the small Dunn micropolitan area make up the other 600,000.
You are correct that the Triangle is probably the best choice in the SE for higher education jobs with NC State, UNC and Duke all in the same metro. A host of other colleges and universities add to this list and include: NC Central, Meredith, Peace College, St. Mary's & Wake Tech. Wake Forest used to be in the area too until they moved the campus to Winston-Salem 50+ years ago.

I'm not even from the southeast, and the answer would be Atlanta, no brainer. But Charlotte and Jacksonville are 1M+ metro areas as well. However, Jacksonville is probably too conservative for your tastes.
