Maybe by 2010, some American city will be building a skyscraper taller than the Burj Dubai!

Sears Tower.

The height of neither the Spire nor the Freedom Tower will change from what is planned, so Spire will be #1 at 2000 feet and FT #2 at 1776 feet. Neither the Spire nor Freedom Tower will be topped out by Jan 1 2010, however. Call me a skeptic. Now by 2011 or 2012 maybe the answer will be the Spire.

according to wikipedia's tallest buildings, the spire will be completed by 2010 along with the freedom tower.

Chicago will still have the tallest skyscraper in the country. In fact, to my knowledge even without the Chicago Spire they would still have the tallest one...the new World Trade Center will not surpass the Sears Tower in height I don't think. I think the Chicago Spire might be the tallest structure in the world correct once it is completed?

Unless the tower in Dubai is constructed with jumbo steel or some sort of titanium throughout the majority of its internal skeleton, you may see that tower's failure to provide safe shelter for its inhabitants on the news, shortly after its completion. Alot of wind in Dubai sometimes. A warning for ultratall structures being considered for Chicago. Same for any supertall structure in Las Vegas. Even when the wind isn't blowing all that hard, the constant moving tends to weaken the structure over time, and maybe, on a molecular level, the steel used in these structures may not be up for the task. There could be failure in the lower level of the structures from simple gravity. I'm not even mentioning any seismic activity. Humans will overreach themselves again, much like they did with the Titanic, the Hindenburg and the World Trade Center towers.

This tower is now the tallest building in the world. Doesn't look like it is at risk of falling to me.

Yes, but that includes the top of its spire. Not including the spire, unfortunately, its hight is not very impressive.

We don't overreach ourselves. Its in our nature to go out and strive for the best. Unfortunately, tragedies happen but if all had such a timid attitude for "overreaching" ourselves, we would have never invented fire because theres a chance it could burn someone!
