I got reports from friends in Santa Cruz, California that they witnessed the tsunami surge hit the marina/harbor... Several million dollars in damage and lots of boats destroyed or damaged. One friend was standing on a bridge over the harbor when a 30 foot boat with a 40-foot mast crashed right next to where they were standing.
Crescent City got hit bad ---and historically this was the same town that was practically destroyed by the tsunami after the 1964 Anchorage, Alaska earthquake. The harbor for the town was poorly constructed during it's original planning and the location of the town is near the westernmost part of the coastline--meaning it's especially prone to tsunamis.
We also get a sense of how bad it could be--that even the towns well inside the Bay are very vulnerable should a massive tsunami hit San Francisco and environs. Scary.
So true...I suppose its a huge eyeopener for coastal cities all over the world.
Its really weird cause around 11:15 tonight I was driving on a freeway right alongside the shore of SF Bay and like never before in my life, I felt kind of ominous cause I immediately thought of the tsunami in Japan.
