In the rural and small town living section of city-data, most people there consider a place that has 50,000 people for example to be a big city.

If you think 50,000 qualifies as a big city, than you definitely do not live in one of America's/the world's major metropolitan areas.

I don't think many people think 50k is big, unless that's city proper. I think a city over 1m MSA is big.

I don't consider 50k big for a city proper. Most cities with only 50k people do not even have night clubs.

A metro at or near 500k I would consider medium sized. I consider a large city of one consisting of a metro greater than 1 million.

Neither do I but in a case similar to Atlanta it could be larger. And I know of cities at 8000 and 7000 with night clubs. We have countless in Louisiana.

There's levels of "bigness." I suppose 50K is a bit too small to be "The Big City" but I've known people who see it as such. It depends on what you're used to. (I've never lived in a town of over a 1,000 or spent much time in a town of over 25,000)

A city of over 200,000, or a metro of over 500,000, probably would "feel" big city to me even if I know it's not precisely so by US standards. I'd say a city of over 400,000, or a metro of over a million, is big city to me.

metro of 1mil would be a big city to me.

I live outside a city of 50k and although it is the largest thing within 3 hours in each direction, it still doesn't have that "big city" feel.

Don't get me wrong though, Charleston is no doubt a mid sized city to me with a metro of 300k

At first this sounded too selective to me, but this criteria would allow there to be either 14 or 32 "big cities" in the US while allowing for up to around 600 in the entire world. So not too bad. Although going by it neither Minneapolis nor Pittsburgh would be "big cities", if I'm reading it right, and I think they're often placed in a kind of "gray area." Some insist they are big cities and others that they aren't. Although I guess my post would also exclude those two. (Maybe I should have gone "core-city of over 300,000 and/or metro of over 700,000) Interesting.

A big city is NYC. Maybe Chicago. I know my perception is skewed.
