Portland routinely ranks at the top of the most bike-friendly of America's major cities. It is also renowned for it's urban planning, for it's pedestrian-friendly downtown, efficient public transit system, and it's liberal sprinkling of green space throughout the city.
San Francisco hands down! Beautiful architecture, historic homes & neighborhoods, water all around, etc etc. It's one of the greatest cities in the United States and quite possibly the world.
The only downside I see is the intense cost-of-living.
You can't beat Central Park, but all in all to your question, other than the weather I would say Boston.
It is really an interesting place to visit on foot.
After living in NYC, it seems like a breeze.
I think I will still start a new thread for this, but maybe I'll get an answer here since it's relevant...
I'm looking to take a short vacation to relax, & I would prefer not to have to rent a car.
I am thinking of someplace very remote & SAFE like North Dakota or Iowa.
I am wondering if anyone knows of a small town in one of those states or any other but had my hopes on ND where I can stay in a cabin or a little Courtyard (I can get an empoyee discount ) & be near a lake or parks or hiking...
Basically I'm looking for a little retreat where I can be surrounded by nature but be safe & relaxed - ie not many people or cars!
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Seattle should be up on that list. Extremely walkable and bikeable city. Downtown is great there, lots to do and see. Up the street in Belltown is nice too. No matter where you live in the city limits you can probably walk to a group of shops and restaraunts within a mile, usually less.
As for bikeable, Hilton Head Island is incredible. Trails everywhere. You can't drive down the street without seeing bikes on both sides at any time. I believe you can go esentially everywhere on the island by bike trail, which is saying a lot because the island is fairly large. If you are looking for somewhere safe to bike and be surrounded by beautiful scenery and nature, Hilton Head is a great place to consider.
Oh My Gosh........thank you so much for the links to this site, I didn't even know this existed. I joined, because I want to see many more pictures. I think Boise looks amazing!!!!!!!! I am wondering if I can afford to live there, and what the summers and winters are like. I have been so busy looking into CO. I haven't given Boise much thought. The area looks VERY cool!!!
What are the pros and cons of Boise?
I am an older single female almost 50, who loves to bike/walk and live the downtown life....coffeeshops/bookstores, etc.
Are there certain zipcodes to look for housing that are near the downtown area, I would be happy in?
