Hostile? Why would Minneapolis or Chicago be a good winter Olympics city? Neither have mountains (MN has large hills, up north, but those may be too short for most skiing events). Summer, I agree. Winter, hell no!
If you think cold cities can host winter Olympics, then I don't think you know what you're talking about.
It is clear that the European-led IOC will always have an anti-American slant. They've stated so in multiple press releases, but they don't directly say something as banal as "the US sucks, we ain't going there." They state that their aim is to "take the Olympics and sports to the world."
So it is plainly obvious that any US city will lose. First it is Rio in South America, then it will likely be a city in Africa, then back to Asia again, then likely back to Europe, then the middle east. Doesn't matter how dangerous or backward it is in, if they can appear as "fostering sport" aka being pigs willing to accept any bribe from a country with looser rules and/or being in the fortunate position of being from Europe.
I predict it won't be until 2032 that the USA may, just MAY, have a chance. Until then, cities should just not even bother. It's clear the IOC is frothing at the mouth over anti-Americanism, "fostering sport", and over the television and lucrative revenue rights of airing the Olympics.

I was thinking along the lines of accomodations, mass transit, etc. Chicago is a big city and has alot to offer. I completely forgot about the hills/mountain aspect. I think that it could handle a very large venue like the Olympics.

I actually just like the idea that smaller cities are more capable of hosting the Winter Olympics than Summer Olympics.
The IOC cannot go very long without letting America host either Olympics. We just generate so much money that they need us.

I think Salt Lake City might have a chance at some point to host the Winter Olympics again. I personally think that it should be a very very very long time before the Summer Olympics are back in the USA.
I've always been a fan of the Olympics. When did the anti-Americanism sentiment set in with them? What do you think caused it?
In my opinion, two things led to an anti-American slant among the IOC:
1) The Atlanta games in 1996: These games were so obviously bought by Coca-Cola's advertising dollars that many people said these were the "Coke Games". In the USA, we are used to this corporate raping of what is supposed to be for the love of the sport and twisting it instead into a profit motive (see the MLB's time outs for commercial breaks). That's the real reason why soccer didn't catch on as well ... it's because no right-minded corporation wants to air a show that has zero commercial time except at halftime. The rest of the world rightly shuns this rampant commercialism and discourages rampant commercialism. The games were also glitchy.
2) Revenue from the games' advertising and air time rights are usually dominated by US firms. This has caused angst before among the IOC, because the way the Olympic Committees are structured, their funding is proportional to the ad and other revenue they bring in. Therefore the US funding is enormous compared to other countries.
I see your from WV and I mean no offense, but there is no chance a WV ski resort will hold the winter olympics. If the winter olympics are once again in the eastern US it will be in NY or VT (maybe NH or ME). Most likely one of the huge Vermont resorts, although I recall hearing that there were only a few mountains in the east tall enough to host the olympics (Lake Placid obviously and I think Sugarloaf as well). If the Winter Olympics comes to eastern North America I think by far the best option is Quebec City, but since Canada just had the winter olympics a US city/town may have a better shot.
If you would ever visit snowshoe you might change your mind. But its my list and if I want to include the best ski resort on the East Coast, I will
lol. I think the Twin Cities would make a great host for the Winter Olympics as well. Chicago too....
How? Where would you ski at. There are no places within a 500 mile radius of those cities that could host decent skiing events with consistent snowfall. I'm not talking about a measly 50 inch base either.
Winter Olympics in Seattle will never happen. I remember when I was young and the Olympic committee came to Seattle to try and host the game. It didn't work though cause the Olympic committee wanted all the local businesses with Olympia and Olympic in their business name to change their names. That was a pipedream considering Olympia is the state capitol of Washington, and you have the Olympic mountains and Olympic peninsula west of Seattle. I'm on the side of the local business owners not the thieving IOC which goes from city to city holding a few weeks of games just to nearly bankrupt every city they have gone to.
