Lots of interesting view points here. New York has definitely made a strong case for itself. I've spent plenty of time in NYC, but never anywhere else in the state and I'm a little bummed about that now. Of the East Coast states I've actually seen a lot of, I'd have to go with Virginia as most scenic. North Carolina and West Virginia are gorgeous too though.
Honest.. mile after mile, the shoreline of MAINE will take your breath away, over and over again. check out "Images" on google and tell us what you think. Look at Bar Harbor, Ogunquit and use a map starting from the southern tip and move noth up the shoreline through town images.
It's ga-ga gorgeous.. A must see, truly, it gets into your soul.
NH (especially the White Mountains, the Appalachian Trail section, and the Monadnock region with its superb blueberries).
VT (especially its maple-syrup sugaring off season, its Green Mountains, and its privately owned restaurants and home-made food eateries).
RI (especially the ambience of its beautiful beaches).
MA (for its great seafood restaurants, such as the "Clam Shack" up Ipswich way, where you can have the best fried clams one could ever hope to eat -- line goes around the building before the place opens).
VA (especially for its distance from the snowbelt!)
