Is it just me, or has 2011 been the craziest weather year the United States has had in a while? Major snowstorms in the South in January. A giant blizzard in the Midwest in February. Tornadoes everywhere in April and May, including a large number of violent ones, and a historic outbreak in the South. Flooding on seemingly every major river in the middle third of the country. Severe drought and wildfires in Texas and the southern Great Plains. Now, a brutal heat wave across the Midwest and the Northeast.

My car said 107 about an hour ago - think this nasty suburban parking lot is like a convection oven. I think it is actually supposed to hit 100 today in Philly and 102 tomorrow. Honestly high 90s are not rare in the summer but 102 sure is
Yep that weather map of the whole US doesn't clearly show that very narrow little band on the coast of Southern California that is 30º cooler than the rest of the country right now- high of 74º today in San Diego and the rest of the week, a perfect 66º right now- ahhhhh
Sorry, just had to dig. I feel for you guys, I can't stand the heat.
Oh yeah. It's been relatively quiet out west, so I forgot. I've heard it's unusual for there to be rain in California in June, though.

I think the heat and drought in Texas is probably directly responsible for the heat waves in the Midwest. High pressure just expands north out of Texas into the Midwest. I imagine in order for the Northeast to get a sustained heat wave like the Midwest has had (a week or more of heat at a time), then the deep South from Arkansas and Louisiana over to Georgia would probably have to be the region bearing the worst of the heat/drought instead of Texas. That way when high pressure expands north, it covers the eastern third of the U.S.

Here's hoping for a calm and quiet fall.
It's definitely been the craziest weather in the past year.
Our cool wave, 102-104, should be arriving this weekend. At least the temps will again be tolerable. It's the over 107's that really get to you...
