What would be considered "comfort" food where you live? I live in Pittsburgh, and while I don't have an Eastern European heritage, almost all the food I consider "comfort" would fall into that classification. For example, pierogis, haluski, stuffed cabbage (galumpki) all fall into that category.
Used to love it. I now have a gluten intolerance wheat allergy and can't handle dairy well either. Thank goodness they make gulten free pizzas with dairy free cheese. I can make them myself
I'm Italian though . So for me it's Cavatelli and meatballs...seemingly more popular in Cleveland than other Italian areas (It's the most common pasta here, so it seems that way at least. Buffalo/upstate NY is the other other place I've seen it #1 on a menu.)
We have a bunch. Where I'm from in Massachusetts (New Bedford area), there is a big Portuguese influence. Chourico (or Linguica) and Chips is common. My favorite is probably the Portuguese Sirloin... Nice sirloin in a garlic/saffron/tomato type sauce with a fried egg and grilled red peppers on top. All served over fresh sliced, fried potatoes.
Of course, we have the traditional New England favorites... Clam Chowder is everywhere. We do fried clams, calamari, scallops (New Bedford is the biggest scallop port in the nation), and, of course, fish and chips. Lobster Rolls are popular in the summer, but I hate them. Almost every good seafood place in the New Bedford area serves Lobster Mac and Cheese which is even better than it sounds.
Those things are what I think of and what I grew up with. There's lots of Irish and Italian influence in the region too, but Portuguese food reminds me of my childhood. It's what I miss the most when I leave Massachusetts.
