I hold the opinions of those on this message board in very high regards and so I would appreciate your input on this. I would like to know the pros and cons of both North Carolina and Colorado, more specifically the Charlotte, NC and Denver, CO areas. I have big dogs like that open places to run, I love to hike, I love mountains, I love trees and all other kinds of nature, and I love horesback riding. I love the south and disagree with the stigma placed on southerners but I also love the beauty of the west. I'm currently studying to teach elementary-aged children and I'd like to specialize in either education of the mentally disabled or education for the deaf. In terms of these hobbies and preferences of mine, which would you recommend for someone like me? Oh, and probably most importantly, my pockets ain't too deep.

If you like mountains, I guess my question is, "why Charlotte"? I would think Asheville NC would be more appropriate.

At any rate, if you want to be a teacher, I would be very leary of teaching in Charlotte's public schools. I don't know if Denver's are much better, but they are probably not worse.

Colorado and North Carolina are both beautiful but I prefer the mountains in North Carolina, to me there are more gentle and I also agree Asheville is a good place to look.

You are correct the Asheville is more mountainous, but there are mountains w/i 30 miles of downtown Charlotte

But you can't drive an hour out of Charlotte and pull over next to these!

WONDERFUL PIC, NickMan!!

Both are beautiful - totally different vibe in each area, though, don't you think?

I love WNC but the Rocky Mtns are beautiful as well!

why Charlotte?

Thanks, Rach.. it was a bit hazy that day, but only 60 minutes or so from the hustle and bustle of Denver! The photo there is probably taken at about 12,000 feet.

No...but you can drive an hour from Charlotte to see this off someone's back deck (in Hendersonville, NC):

Or you can drive for an hour from Charlotte to see this sunset (in Rutherfordton, NC):

Asheville is only 100 miles from Charlotte...just over an hour's drive...the mountains are much closer than that.

Hard choice -- I had suggested Ft Collins to OP as well b/c of so many young prof's and outdoor activities. What do you guys think?

We're in FC right now, but MAN I do miss NC as well!! I'm just a beach baby at heart and can't take not being able to walk or drive to the beach!

Loved Rutherfordton -- such a cute downtown - FC reminds me of it a little!
