I am a 55 yr old newly widowed housewife living in suburban Chicago who wants to move. One of my daughters will be finishing college after summer internship and the other daughter will be in jr college for two yrs before transferring.(she wants to stay with me for awhile)I have a son living in Ct. I donot work but have enough to live on at least 60k per yr for next 20 yrs. I will also collect ss in about 8 yrs.I will have more when I sell my home. Looking for a very safe place for my girls. I want them to meet educated wholesome men.lol. I want to be in a pretty place with all 4 seasons but not like Chicago winters.Low property taxes are important as I think I will buy a small home. It is important that I dont ruin their lives by moving. I have lived in georgia,kansas,maryland,europe and d.c.I just want to live safely and read and do volunteer work. My girls need to have satisfying lives with good jobs and an active social life that is safe.Do not want to move west.I do love the ocean but it is not mandatory...any ideas????? I can purchase a home out right without a mortage and have 60k per yr.

What's your budget for housing? Do you want to rent or buy? Both will be a determining factor in whether you can afford to live in a safe area of some cities.
Check out Durham, North Carolina. It's a vibrant, fairly safe, well-educated city (home of Duke University) with a milder four season climate. The cost of living I think you'll find appealing with low property taxes and a nice housing stock to choose from ranging from well kept up bungalows and cape cods to new construction.

I second Nashville. It's a very nice town with wholesome values. Your daughters have very good chances of meeting men who aren't douchebags. You can afford a nice home in the suburbs for a good price. And it has all four seasons I believe. Good luck!
I'm seconding the Research Triangle region in North Carolina Raleigh, Durham, Chapel-hill, and Cary. from an Education standpoint, it's hard to do better. Three huge schools within 35-40 minutes of each other amongst other smaller schools. UNC, NC State and Duke University are the big three. Housing is plentiful, taxes are low by most standards, crime is not an issue, and best of all, all four seasons, and one more plus this state is one of few with both the mountains and beaches within 2-3 hours drive either way.
I live in Nashville, TN, and I wouldn't say it's great, I would say it's decent. It's really relaxed.
