OMG, I can't believe I forgot about Atlanta and Nashville...Atlanta is without a doubt tied with Boston for the number one state capital, and Nashville rocks too.

I like Santa Fe. Doesn't feel like a government town, lots of artistry, very eclectic, excellent downtown with great stores, restaurants, and museums and its own brand of architecture with awesome scnery on the periphery.
Most vanilla and boring state capital I've been to is Salem, OR. Even the state house is dull looking.
Montpelier is interesting down in a mountain valley and at 8,000 people it really is just a small town, albeit a scenic one.
One state capital that has tons of untapped potential is Albany. Approximately 3 hours to either Boston, NYC, or Montreal, near tons of lakes, the Berkshires and the Adirondacks, nice architecture and parks with good urban bones, it's a city that I'd like to see thrive and grow but its under the radar for now.
In no order: Atlanta, Boston, Phoenix, Sacramento, Denver, Indianapolis, St. Paul, Columbus, Nashville, and Salt Lake City.
I prefer larger capitols, they have more character than just being the state capitol compared to a place like Springfield, Illinois.
