Well, yes Alyeska is great, but from November to February you are pretty much dealing with 6 hours of daylight. If you go for skiing, try March or April.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming is great year 'round, but winter brings in the tourism. You could probably say the same about most world class ski resorts.

Houston is vibrant in winter, on the golf course for example. Summer season is the off season and winter is prime time golf. Houston doesnt slow in the winter at all, rodeo and other related and unrelated activities make it great if you dont want to see snow. (minimal snow birds unlike fla, snow birds can make the line at the restaurants exciting but crowds things up or so I have been told.

Another good event that is going on now: Downtown Syracuse

You'll find some cities up north with winter carnivals, but outside the winter carnival festival the cities tend to be dead.

If you just want very active cities in the winter, then Miami, Phoenix, Tucson, and New Orleans are your best bets.
The problem with those cities is they don't have winters, so dont count. Most cities up North have no real change in activity in the winter unless its a beach resort.
Did you see any of the Blizzard coverage last weekend, behind the liveshots you saw people walking around Copley Sq, or Boston Common just having a nice Friday night.

I would say Burlington VT, Portland ME, Northampton MA, West Hartford CT, NYC, Syracuse NY, Buffalo NY, Lake Placid NY, Plattsburgh NY, Boston MA, Bennington VT, The North and South shore towns of MA, Springfield MA, Hartford CT and the list could go on forever. People in the northeast don't hibernate in the winter at all, We get out and live life. Dress for the weather and you are fine. I would rather be out in the winter than in 90 degree heat with 90% humidity any day.
