what are some of the best historic towns in the country? im thinking about charming victorian brick storefronts, gas streetlamps and english-style taverns and antique shops.

If you want "English style" taverns, perhaps you should go to.... England? Some of the best preserved small towns I've seen, where it feels like you're going back in time a hundred years, are isolated towns in rural Nevada. Like Elko, Ely, Tonopah, Austin, etc.

Boston's North End? I guess we can count that as a "town". I love the North End, and the preservation is absolutely stunning.

Lots of places in upstate NY have 'quaint' downtowns and Victorian houses. Don't know about the gaslights. Probably against the EPA regs.

I think I heard somewhere that one of the largest collections of commercial Victorian architecture in the country was on the south side of Pittsburgh. Probably not what you're looking for, but it is a pretty cool place.
