I read from a blog four Canadian kids went to Davenport, Iowa and build a raft--really just a big board--at Home Depot. They navigated 100km of the river before stopping. Along the way they were well received by folks living in river towns.
It looks fun and I want to try. So I solicit everyone's advice. What issues will likely impede a journey from Minneapolis to NOLA? How should I prepare and research?
There's a reason why they started in Davenport. The natural river in Mpls. would have been ideal for white water rafting. It is tamed now, but there are locks that I would soubt that the Army Corps. would let a piece of plywood on. There are sand bars that get pregressively worse as you go downriver from Mpls. towards La Crosse. The reason why the river In New Orleans is so much slower can be credited to the fact that the river down there is four times wider. Unless you rent a decent boat, I would advise against it.
