According to the U.S. Coast Guard statistics, in Minnesota, there were 853,448 boats registered for 5,100,958 inhabitants, a ratio of approximately 17 boats per 100 people. This is the highest ratio in the United States. You can see it here:

Owning a boat here is nothing special, and in some circles,
not owning a boat is rarer than owning one. Many own multiple boats.

Kayaks and canoes are also popular. Despite their lower price, kayaks in particular seem to be a symbol of the middle-class, physically active, desk job set, at least to me. Jetskis and personal watercraft are also highly utilized. Yachts and sailboats are less common but fairly widespread on Lake Superior and I would suppose Lake Minnetonka.
