According to the U.S. Coast Guard statistics, in Minnesota, there were 853,448 boats registered for 5,100,958 inhabitants, a ratio of approximately 17 boats per 100 people. This is the highest ratio in the United States. You can see it here: Arizona Has More Boats Per Capita Than Any State

Owning a boat here is nothing special, and in some circles, not owning a boat is rarer than owning one. Many own multiple boats.

The most common type of boat looks something like this:

Kayaks and canoes are also popular. Despite their lower price, kayaks in particular seem to be a symbol of the middle-class, physically active, desk job set, at least to me. Jetskis and personal watercraft are also highly utilized. Yachts and sailboats are less common but fairly widespread on Lake Superior and I would suppose Lake Minnetonka.

Many yachts are on Lake St. Clair in metro Detroit. Michigan is one of the top 5 states for boat registrations.

Plenty of boats here in Lafayette Louisiana, though most are bass boats and pirogues.

Any idea where you'd get historical figures for per capita boat ownership? I'm guessing Alaska was higher than 8th when the Anchorage area was a smaller proportion of the population. There are plenty of boat owners there of course, but not like in the smaller towns on the coast or along rivers where in many cases your boat might get more use than your car.
