Where do you live? Do you have air conditioning? Do most homes in your area have A/C?

I live in the Duluth area of northern Minnesota. There has definitely been an increase in the number of homes that have A/C in the past decade or so, largely because of repeated hot summers (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, etc.). Generally, you really only need it for two or three weeks out of the year here, although people with A/C tend to have it on regularly in the summer. Most (all?) new homes tend to have central A/C, whereas older homes and apartments tend to either have wall units or no A/C. All large chain stores have "HVAC" systems, but some isolated stores dealing in things other than perishables still have nothing for cooling. Our store did not have A/C, and which made it unbearable some days out of the year. Of course, there was always the cool basement for relief.

Next week is looking to be hot, with highs in the mid-upper 80's and lows only falling to about 65 to 70. You might think I'm exaggerating or over-sensitive to heat, but with no A/C things become totally different.

I don't know of resident here, and only one business that has A/C. We get a couple 80 degree days a summer, a few more 70 degree days, but overall it isn't necessary.

In Phoenix it's a requirement to have a/c. We use it 10 months out of the year.

DC area. All have AC. All have heating. It's a must for summer and winter, respectively.

In NYC all homes have heating (required by law) and newer homes also have built-in air-conditioning. In older apt. buildings tenants have the option to install their own air-conditioning units and most people do if they can afford to. All places of business in NYC have heating and air-conditioning.

In White House, TN, all homes have heating and air conditioning. With winter temperatures that can get to 10 degrees or less and summers that can get to 100 or more, both are a necessity.

Majority of homes have A/C (maybe 2/3?), but central A/C is usually only in newer homes. In some houses, you can see room A/C s on the upper floors and nothing on the ground floor.

Just about all businesses have A/C, but a few small ones don't.

I saw signs in front of several motels in coastal Washington advertising A/C. I was wondering whether they thought some of their customers really hated any warmth, or were just tourists who were drawn to pick a place with A/C without realizing the climate.
