Thought this would be interesting because depending on where you live, you may never leave your own state...or you may be so close to a border you leave daily.
For me personally being in Mid-Michigan, it's never more than 2-3 times a year and only for vacation. Detroit has all our big city activities such as sports, concerts, or a big airport. So there is no real reason to leave unless its just for fun.
I live in DC so I leave nearly everyday to go to Maryland or Virginia.
My geography changes everyday sometimes up 8 states in a day. Been to all states except Maine,N. Dakota and Nevada. I'm always on the go. It's strange that as much as I travel to these places I don't even need a map or GPS. It feels like you've lived there but don't. After the first few years the excitement eventually wears off and is not a big deal anymore. My geographic perspective has changed over the years. As the scenery changes so does the culture and the weather.
I voted more than 12 times a year. It's probably more than I can even count. I just don't keep track anymore like I use to.
Are you joking, or really serious that New England or Mid Atlantic feels like a foreign country? If so, I highly recommend even a trip to Canada or Mexico to really feel foreign, though for Canada less so.
Europe would be a good option as well.
Ive been to Canada (drove to Toronto) and to Europe (Germany, a number of times), and very briefly to walk across the bridge to the plaza in Jaurez.
Canada did seem like the US, but....different....too. Thats the physical appearance. Watching their TV and following the politics it was pretty clear "ah aint in Kansas anymore".
Yes, New England esp feels like a different country the way "Canada" felt different. So did California when I was living there.
I travel out of state about once a month. I have friends and family in New York State. Sometimes I go on long bike rides and cross over into the Vermont border.
"Out of state" isn't as meaningful compared to people living in other parts of the country.
Except for visiting family out of state, I stick to Washington. Endlessly fascinating with many types of habitats, geography, culture. Glaciated peaks to rolling wheat fields, to wild ocean beaches to sage deserts, to remote--and not so remote--islands, and a whole lot in between. Large enough that I never tire of it and there are still places in the state I haven't visited yet.
Only a few times a year. Very little of my family lives out of state so I don't have to travel to see them and it's not always easy to go away. There really isn't anything in Ohio or WV to see worth the drive anyway that I haven't seen yet.
I've left once since I moved here (2 1/2 years ago), and am about to leave again. Vacations and to see family. Some people get out several times a year, but it's expensive.
