What would you all say are some general characteristics of mid-atlantic cities, or states? Also, what would you all describe as the regional boundaries for the mid-atlantic. I noticed that the definition is gradually changing to primarily refer to Virginia, DC, Maryland, West Virginia, and Delaware instead of the earlier definition of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

I think there's very little agreement these days. I grew up in Virginia, and it was the South. The Mid Atlantic was NY/PA/NJ. I think the idea of Virginia being a Mid Atlantic state has come from Northern Virginians who don't want to be associated with the "old south stigma" of "rova" (and I find "rova" to be quite offensive, btw).
I always thought the mid Atlantic started at Maryland?
I grew up in va in the southwestern part and it (to me anyway) feels very southern, if not Appalachian. But I can see the case being made for the midatlantic region starting with the dc burbs.
I wasnt aware there was lots of german in the mid-atlantic states. I agree about Italian, and other southern european as well as eastern european like polish, and greek. Also there is many jews here too. The food is ethnic from southern or eastern europe. Also we have much puerto rican and dominican.
