Please tell me if this sounds like any place you've been:
- winters with snow, near downhill skiing
- many thunderstorms
- nearby water for sailing
- copious sunshine
- warm, but not humid, summers
- lots of green space
- copious deciduous forests
- cultural diversity
- a local culture which celebrates live music, local food, etc.
- proximity to universit(ies) with graduate and professional programs, and cultural opportunities
- near, but not, a major city
You're not going to get all those things in one place, sadly for you. However, there are of course places with many of those qualities. Try the western parts of Washington and Oregon, though you will have to ditch the copious sunshine most of the year. Then there's also several suburban communities in the Salt Lake City Metro Area in Utah not too far from Downtown Salt Lake City and nearby lakes.
