We are looking to emigrate to the USA from the UK. We have 2 young children 7 & 12 and are looking for advice on which are the best areas for safe family life, thats close to the coast. I have a job that will be based around NY, NJ, CT, VA, MA, MD...Good community, low crime & schooling are at the top of our list. We have looked at Rhode Island, New London, Trumbull, Burlington, Stamford...the list goes on...looking in the region of $350,000...All help would be appreciated....Thanks

Does it have to be close to NYC, in terms of considering NY? I was thinking that maybe something like Orange County NY, which is one of, if the fastest growing county in NY State. Somewhere in the Monroe-Woodbury or Cornwall School Districts could work, as they are in southern Orange County closer to NYC and are more affordable than say Westchester or Rockland Counties. It is further away, but it also has commuter train and bus service into NYC. Look specifically into Harriman, Woodbury, Central Valley, Highland Mills and Cornwall-on-Hudson. All are villages, but if you live just outside of them, that will give you a lower tax burden as villages tend to have duplicate services in NY.

I'd look in northern New Jersey. The NJ suburbs fit your description perfectly, our cities are where the crime is. Our suburbs are very safe, with great schools, a good mix of upper, middle, and working class, and a lot of greenery. If you can afford it, it's a great place to raise a family. If you're working in NYC (are you?) or will need to go to the city frequently for work this is one of your best options.

Counties in northern NJ I'd recommend are Union, Bergen, Essex, and Morris. I'd also recommend Monmouth County in central NJ, along the ocean. Most of central and northern NJ offers easy commuting into NYC, around NJ, and easy access to other cities in the BosWash Corridor.

Here is a link to the NJ Transit rail map, which gives you a good idea of towns along train lines running into NYC and just throughout NJ. The majority of those towns will be great to live in. Some of these stops are also major hubs that will bring you elsewhere along the coast or country. It's a lot to look at at first but if you look at it closely it's easy to understand. These areas are the hubs of northern NJ. http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/Rail_System_Map.pdf

Not sure if you're sort of mocking my post or just trying to be funny (in either case, I don't care carry on), but since the OP probably has limited info on the US since he/she came on here to ask us for help, I'm going to step in here and say to absolutely NOT consider Camden.

And this OP is from almost a year ago now and all probably irrelevant. I didn't notice until now.

Yeah, no.
Camden is one of the most dangerous and crime-ridden cities in the US.
Does anyone even live there anymore? Who knows, but OP.....Camden is a big no-no.
