Houston has the least public transportation of any city of comparable size. Any other metropolis that huge, would have trains or subways. Instead, they keep building more and more rings of beltways, encouraging sprawl development.

I've also heard that Houston has no zoning laws, meaning that buildings of all kinds are juxtaposed next to each other, without rhyme or reason. The state of TX overall, some posters on this forum claim, has high property taxes. The state also has one of the worst-performing schools systems overall, in the USA -- and yet Governor Perry wants to slash school funding even further. And of course, Houston has very hot and humid summers.

I did not know there was such a thing as a "cool" summer evening in San Antonio! I knew about the Tex Mex food and the riverwalk. I have thought about visiting and probably will some day.

I mentioned car culture because a lot of posters on City-Data prefer cities where they can live without a car and get around on bike or using mass-transit. Houston isn't that type of city and gets a bad rap on these forums because of it.
Except Houston is that type of city. Cars are simply the easiest way to get around, but people can and do live here without a car.

No. There is no finer city in American than Houston, TX! New York, Chicago, Boston, D.C......eat your heart out, HOUSTON is how you really live!! Why people in these other cities pay 2, 3, or 4+ times as much to live there is beyond me!

Seriously, if this thread is meant to be serious, perhaps it should have included: "adjusted for cost of living", to which I would have had much less sarcasm.

Are there any cities that are better then houston texas in your opinion?
Yes. But what does my opinion matter - you are the one that will be living there.

Seriously - I get tired of this one size fits all attitude. Usually it is an oversight and the OP goes on to say what kind of a city they personally are looking for. But sometimes, like here, I don't see it. I wonder if it is an outgrowth of the commercial culture where young people are brainwashed into believing there is only one best car, detergent, city or whatever.

If you think so please state why.

Thanks for sharing.
Better for *what* overall? Sounds like part of your question is missing (e.g. better for your type of career? Certain activities? Dating? Cost of living? Etc...)

"Better for what?" is the appropriate question. Houston is great at many things, yet there are numerous things other cities do better. Whether or not this city or that city is all around better is completely relative.

Well Houston does have a light rail line that they are extending, and they are also building two new light rail lines as well.
