MA must be the only state where Dunkin Donuts is readily available everywhere you go. In every other major city I go to, they are as rare as oryx. Not that I have anything against Starbucks or Peet's Coffee, their coffee is great but Dunkin is just another category of coffee you'd crave from time to time. It's just like the analogy of burgers eaten at Friendly's versus McDonald's.
At the same time you don't find many variants of the Dunkin brand, the only one I can think of is Krispy Kreme and they are rare too. I am sure there is market for quick coffee that is served with creme and sugar mixed in instead of having to do it yourself like what is done at Starbucks and Peet's. Is the general opinion different from mine or does Dunkin have a poor strategy for expanding beyond its home state?
I don't know about other regions, but they do pretty well in the Atlanta area. I know a couple of people that swear by their coffee, and even buy their beans at the supermarket to grind at home.
The DD in my neighborhood recently underwent a very nice reno, and always seems to be busy. It doesn't hurt that it's across the road from a train station.
I have to admit though that the only time I've seen a two level DD with double a drive-thru was somewhere in Mass or NH!
Rhode Island is saturated with Dunkin Donuts, but Honey Dew Donuts does a good second place business, and IMHO, has better iced coffee than DD. I have also noticed that DD seems to be slowly but surely building a toehold in Florida, at least in the Tampa area, as there seem to be more and more of them every time I visit (once a year at least). I think all the transplanted New Englanders down there are taking over, lol.
DD is all over new york. I wish they would open here.
Krispy Kreme did an excellent job in marketing, but offerd a crappy product and most of america bought into Krispy Kreme Frenzy back in the late 1990's. Dunkin Donut Franchisees just couldn't compete with the hype and many went out of business

In Arizona they're extremely rare. I don't think many people here think of them as a place to get coffee, just donuts. My wife is from Mass. and when I first went there with here I asked her, without sarcasm, why people in the Boston area ate so many donuts.
