With the exception of Las Vegas(which is basically a Californian city,lol), and Phoenix. The rest of the US seems totally different than what I'm used to in So Cal, and the Bay Area, where make most Californians live. Due to the diversity of immigrants from Asia, Mexico, and Central America. It gives California has a unique flavor not found in the rest of the US.
Whenever I travel to parts of the country, I could feel the difference right away. As the fashion, mannerisms, cuisine, and less diversity stick out to me.
Do you guys on CD think California is a world of it's own in the US?
I think different parts of the USA including California and NYC are worlds of their own compared to other parts of the country.
The entire MS River Valley has Catholics, St Louis, St Paul, Memphis where all Frence settlements.
Lousiana has less French speakers than Maine, and their culture comes directly from Maine/ Nova Scotia from the Acadians.
Have you ever been to New Orleans? It isn't anything like any other American city. There is no very large American city like New Orleans that was founded by the French and retains its French culture. No city in Maine is remotely large enough relative to New Orleans, so some little Maine towns on the Quebec border don't count. St. Paul was founded by the French but the culture is mainly Scandanavians. St. Louis was founded by the French but was settled by Americans moving west from the Ohio valley and from immigrants.
Also, have you ever been to Lafayette, LA? The French influence is extremely strong, the cuisine is different than anywhere in the USA. You can get crawfish etouffee, jambalaya, gumbo, rice dressing, and other Cajun specialties.
Louisiana still has parishes instead of counties. NO OTHER state has parishes instead of counties.

There are two cultures of Louisiana. The French Creoles, or the original French settlers, settled Louisiana in the late 1600's. The Cajuns (Acadians that were expelled from Nova Scotia) came in the mid to late 1700's.
It was the blending of these people with Africans and Native Americans and a different food supply that led to an entirely different cuisine and culture.
In many ways what is happening to California is another "manifest destiny", with Mexico reclaiming what was once theirs through peopling a place. It is how we conquered the west and now it's being used on us.
China did the same thing to conquer some of the western provinces. They would setup a town of 100,000 or so filled with immigrants from southeast China and give them jobs there. That would overwhelm the smaller local population.
If you want places that haven't changed then go to rural Maine (if you like it cold) or rural Mississippi (if you like it hot). Those places will retain their characteristics of long ago well into the next century...
Just saying, state borders don't really define cultural regions, for example, Western MS, and the MS Gulf coast (Even Memphis) has more in common with SE LA than NW LA and West Central LA.
Also the Oregon coast has more in common with NorCal coast than the inland empire.
Northern and southern Fl. are polar opposites. Ditto with NOVA and the Tidewater.
Eastern Massachusetts has far more in common with RI than Western Massachusetts which has more in common with CT than eastern Massachusetts.
The only states that are self contained is Texas, Alaska, and Hawaii

Idk about that. El Paso is more like southern New Mexico than Central Texas. Lubbock and Amarillo have more in common with plains cities than Dallas. East Texas is more like Western Louisiana. The Rio Grande Valley is essentially Mexico.
There is just something "cool" about California. It's simple as that. You know when you're there that anyone from back home will take notice.
