What type of ships are named after cities? Battleships are named after states, right? Or was it aircraft carriers?

Could that be a "need to know" question?

Yes lol.

I actually looked it up.

Seems like traditionally, cruisers were named after cities, and battleships were named after states. Armored cruisers and monitors were also named after states, but during the 1900's there was a shortage of state names, so they replaced the state name with a city in said state.

There hasn't been a battleship made in the US since World War II, so some of the newer nuclear powered cruisers have taken up state names.

Aircraft carriers seem to be traditionally named after battles or historic individuals.

You see, they named a submarine class after Los Angeles because L.A. is the city most likely to become an actual submarine after the next big earthquake hits.

Hilarious, even though it's not true . Actually, because the way the plates are situated in the San Andreas Fault, what would actually happen is that Los Angeles would be a slight hair further northwest. The fault is a transform fault, meaning that the fault moves up/down rather than away from one another. Still, I found the post to be hilarious.

I mean really, who seriously cares if the Navy names a ship after their city? If they announced today that they were naming a ship the USS Portland, I would really care less.

EDIT: Stupid, I have to spread reputation around before giving you anymore Steve-o. Does anyone know how much reputation must be spread between each giving to a single user?

LOL

Thanks man. Figured someone would get a chuckle out of that, as most people think California is going to "fall into the ocean" someday because of earthquakes.
