I am going to have several weeks off in the coming months and am looking for U.S./Canadian cities to travel to that I haven't been to or haven't been to in a really long time. I like cities that have great downtowns and some history behind them. The cities I am considering are New Orleans, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Vancouver, and Montreal. I am open to other suggestions. Any recommendations?

Great downtowns with history then Boston or Philadelphia would be your best bet for palpable American history. Though can't go wrong with New Orleans and Montreal either as they would be very different from the norm and everyday conventional types of cities and also have their share of history as well. If you're looking for great scenery then Vancouver would fit the bill though it's a newer more modern city, and San Francisco is well rounded with nice architecture, great downtown/neighborhoods to explore, impressive scenery and iconic landmarks. If I were to choose I'd go with Montreal, just because it's so different culturally and offers great food, history, architecture, shopping, and nightlife.
What kind of activities, food, or attractions are you looking for in a city?

Out of those, for the US I recommend Boston and San Francisco.

Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco or NYC would be my suggestions if you want to go to an American city.
Just so people can give you better, more informed suggestions...
What are you looking for in a city and its surrounding area, meaning, what are your interests and what types of things do you like to do when you travel?
Also, how long are you planning on spending in this city?

CHICAGO! The most all american city. I work in the tourist industry and NOBODY talks bad about this city. They all love it minus the winter. The birth of the skyscraper with a great urban layout along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Great food, music, culture, sports and down to earth people. You gotta go!
I'm looking for a great place to walk around and just explore; great restaurants; a lively downtown; good people watching, maybe a museum or two. I don't want to travel outside of the city.
